I live in Florida and “spring” arrived about a month and a half ago, along with a plethora of fleas! I have a cat and a dog and we live on an acre that is for the most part natural and wooded. Both pets are indoor and outdoor. My home has become recently flea infested. I must say I was happy to note on your website that I should let the pets roam inside since I had been making them stay unhappily outside all the time due to the fleas! Anyway, I also have tropical fish and am afraid to bomb or spray as a result. Also, I just got new stain-master carpet about a year ago and I am hesitant to use chemicals on it. I worry about residue on my beautiful carpet – the slimy feel of it on barefeet, that it will attract dirt and may damage the stain-master “finish” or whatever they do to make the carpet remarkably resistant to staining. What do you suggest?
Go with the ONCE A YEAR FLEA POWDER and FLEA TRAPS. By far the most effective. Combine this with the fact that it’s odorless, nothing that will cause you to have to evacuate the house for any length of time and that it won’t hurt the carpet, this is really the best way to treat. The Traps will really help speed up the removal of the pupae too so be sure and have enough installed.

I am vacationing in Florida Christmas through New Year. Do I need to take precautions against fleas and ticks while there? If so , is there a suitable over the counter medication I can buy? Can you supply the name if needed?

Carol,
If you read our flea control article, you’ll learn repellents won’t help much if you enter a zone where they’re active. So during the visit, the best advice we can give you is to watch to and see if you notice any. A good way to monitor the home you stay at is to set out a Flea Trap in the room where you sleep. These will catch fleas and if this happens within a few days of the visit, you’ll know there is a problem.

If it turns out you end up spending time in a home or area where fleas are active and you get bit, use Sting Relief to minimize the discomfort. It works great on flea bites as well as bites from noseeums, mosquitoes, gnats, bees and wasps.

Lastly, treating your home before you leave will insure that if any fleas come home with you they won’t be able to infest your house. Preventive treatments are easy using Precor 2000 and can be done before you leave. This way the treatment is in place and nothing more will be needed in case there is a chance of fleas being transported.
